Henry Clay Work is best known for the very famous song, "Grandfather's Clock".  He was the son of militant abolitionists who kept a station on the underground railroad.  Trained as a printer, he held typesetting jobs whenever his music writing was unable to provide adequate support.  His first hit was the Civil War song "Brave Boys Are They".  Other well known songs are "Marching Through Georgia", "Kingdom Coming", "Come Home, Father", and "Song of A Thousand Years."  Henry Clay Work was born in Middleton, Connecticut on October 1, 1832.  He died on June 8, 1884, and is buried in Hartford, Connecticut.

This is the first complete published collection of all the songs of Henry Clay Work.  Based on the earliest sheet-music versions, Benjamin Tubb has carefully edited and prepared new staff notations for each song and chorus.  MIDI versions of each of the songs can be heard at Mr. Tubb's website, www.pdmusic.org

PUBLIC DOMAIN STATUS:  All of the selections in this book except "When You Get Home, Remember Me"  are new staff notations taken from early sheet music publications.  "When You Get Home, Remember Me" was arranged by Benjamin Tubb especially for this publication; therefore, the words and melody are in the public domain, but the arrangement is under copyright protection and this exact arrangement cannot be used without permission.  A copy of a letter from the publisher is included with each book that states in part:  ". . . the songs themselves are all in the public domain, and may be freely performed, copied, arranged, etc. by anyone.  The melody and lyrics of "When You Get Home, Remember Me" are also in the public domain, and may be used freely with any accompaniment other than the one we provide, or with none . . .
